Amae (甘え): When Kindness Becomes an Expectation
 
The Japanese word amae (甘え) describes the expectation that someone will accept us, care for us, or accommodate our needs. It is the noun form of amaeru (甘える).
 
There is warmth in this idea. A child seeks comfort from a parent. We turn to loved ones when we feel tired or vulnerable. Depending on someone can express trust and strengthen a relationship.
 
But amae can also become an excuse to avoid responsibility.
 
If you ask someone to do your work while you go out to have fun with your friends, you are expecting that person to carry your burden for your convenience. Their kindness becomes something you feel entitled to receive.
 
This is when someone might say, “Amaeru na!” (甘えるな！) Depending on the context, it means “Don’t take advantage of others” or “Take responsibility for yourself.” It is a firm reminder that kindness does not excuse avoiding your duties.
 
I believe asking for help is healthy. Taking that help for granted is where the problem begins.
 
Before relying on someone, ask yourself: Do I need support, or am I simply choosing the easier path?
 
Kindness deserves gratitude—and responsibility.
