Know Your Position

 

The Japanese expression 立場をわきまえる (tachiba o wakimaeru) means “to understand one’s position.”

 

This does not simply mean that subordinates must obey people with greater authority. It applies equally to managers when they speak to employees. A manager must understand that their position gives their words greater weight. A casual comment, criticism, or request may feel like an order—or even intimidation—to a subordinate.

 

Understanding one’s position means recognizing one’s role, responsibilities, influence, and relationship with others, and behaving accordingly.

 

A manager and an employee have different responsibilities, but both must show respect. Employees should understand what is expected of them, while managers must be careful not to misuse their authority or silence honest opinions.

 

Knowing your position does not mean thinking less of yourself. It means understanding where you stand and how your words and actions affect others.

 

The higher your position, the greater your responsibility to exercise restraint, listen carefully, and create an environment where people can speak honestly.

 

立場をわきまえる is not only a lesson for subordinates. It may be even more important for those in positions of power.
