Here is the first page of my book, 88 Japanese Wisdom: For Business, Leadership, and Life.

 

The first Japanese word in the book is 粋 (iki).

 

Iki describes a refined sense of style, confidence, and sophistication. However, it is never loud, excessive, or intended to impress others. A person who is iki does not need to show off. Their character, taste, and consideration for others appear naturally in the way they speak, dress, and behave.

 

In business, iki can mean being successful without becoming arrogant, being confident without dominating others, and helping people without seeking recognition.

 

True sophistication is not measured by how much attention we attract. It is reflected in how naturally we carry ourselves and how we make others feel.

 

That is why I chose 粋 as the first of the 88 Japanese words in my book. It represents a quiet strength and elegance that I believe are valuable in business, leadership, and life.
