Nureginu: Being Falsely Accused

 

In Japanese, 濡れ衣 (nureginu) means being falsely accused or blamed for something you did not do. Literally, it means “wet clothing.”

 

The origin is said to come from an old story. A stepmother wanted to frame her stepdaughter. To make it look as if the young woman had done something improper with a fisherman, the stepmother placed a fisherman’s wet clothes near her sleeping area. The daughter was innocent, but the “wet clothing” became false evidence against her.

 

From that story, 濡れ衣を着せられる came to mean “to be made to wear a false accusation.”

 

It is a powerful expression because blame can be placed on someone as easily as clothing can be put on their shoulders. Once people see it, they may believe it before asking whether it is true.

 

In business and in life, this is a serious lesson. Before judging someone, we should ask: What is the evidence? Who benefits from this accusation? And have we heard the other side?

 

A false accusation can damage trust, reputation, and relationships. That is why fairness matters. Do not put wet clothes on someone else, and do not accept them as proof too quickly.
