“Washing Your Feet”

 

In Japanese, 足を洗う (ashi o arau) literally means “to wash one’s feet.” As an idiom, it means to quit a line of work, leave a group, or turn away from a past way of life—often one associated with wrongdoing or a troubled past.

 

The expression is sometimes explained through the image of a traveler or worker washing off the dirt after leaving a place or occupation. The person is ready to begin again, leaving what came before behind.

 

In English, we might say “to leave that life behind,” “to walk away,” or, in some contexts, “to go straight.” English also has the phrase “to wash one’s hands of something,” but that usually means refusing responsibility or involvement, so it does not always carry the same meaning.

 

The Japanese expression offers a vivid picture: someone steps away from an old life and washes the dust from their feet. Leaving can take courage. Sometimes it is the first step toward starting over.
