Rest Is Part of the Job
休むことも仕事のうち
Yasumu koto mo shigoto no uchi
“Resting is also part of the job.”
Yasumu koto mo shigoto no uchi
“Resting is also part of the job.”
This Japanese saying reminds us that taking a break is part of doing our work well. Working until we are exhausted does not always produce better results. Sometimes, we need to stop so we can return with fresh energy and a clear mind.
But I can also hear an objection: “Does even our rest have to serve our work?”
Many people may disagree with that way of thinking. Rest has value of its own. Life is more than preparing for the next working day.
I understand that.
Still, this is how we worked, and how many of us continue to work. We took responsibility seriously, and resting meant making sure we could fulfill that responsibility tomorrow.
To me, this saying gives hardworking people permission to pause. You do not have to feel guilty about taking a break.
Rest, too, is part of the job.
