Is Japan Cheap?

People visiting Japan often say, “Japan is so cheap.”

But cheap for whom?

A salary comparison shown on the BizReach website lists a median annual income of ¥6 million—approximately US$37,800 or €33,900. Its top 20% benchmark is ¥7.8 million, about US$49,100 or €44,000. The top 5% starts at ¥11 million, roughly US$69,300 or €62,100.

These conversions use October 12, 2026 exchange rates of approximately ¥158.72 per dollar and ¥177.09 per euro.

The screenshot does not identify the comparison group, so these figures should not be treated as national salary benchmarks.

Still, they raise an important question: what does “cheap” mean to someone earning and spending yen?

Visitors bringing dollars or euros may find meals, shopping, and hotels affordable. Residents pay those same prices with Japanese salaries, while also covering housing, taxes, and everyday expenses.

A visitor’s bargain is not necessarily a resident’s bargain.

Japan may feel inexpensive when you arrive with foreign income. That does not automatically mean life is inexpensive for the people who live there.
