Ketchup — A Sauce That Traveled the World
When you think of ketchup, you probably think of America—hamburgers, hot dogs, and French fries.
When you think of ketchup, you probably think of America—hamburgers, hot dogs, and French fries.
But ketchup may have started its journey far from America.
One widely accepted theory traces the word “ketchup” to southern China. A word sounding something like kê-chiapreferred to a fermented sauce made from fish or seafood. There were no tomatoes in it.
Through maritime trade, the sauce and its name traveled through Southeast Asia and eventually reached Britain. The British created their own versions using ingredients such as anchovies, mushrooms, and walnuts.
Then it crossed the Atlantic.
In the United States, tomatoes became the main ingredient, and by the 19th century, ketchup began evolving into the sweet red sauce we know today.
China → Southeast Asia → Britain → America
This journey reminds me of Japanese curry. It originated in India, traveled through Britain, and arrived in Japan, where we transformed it into something distinctly Japanese.
This is how culture grows.
We borrow. We adapt. We improve. And sometimes, what we create becomes so familiar that we forget it ever came from somewhere else.
That may be one of the most interesting lessons hidden in a bottle of ketchup.
