弱い犬ほどよく吠える
The Weaker the Dog, the Louder It Barks
There is a Japanese saying:

弱い犬ほどよく吠える — Yowai inu hodo yoku hoeru.

“The weaker the dog, the louder it barks.”

The idea is simple. When you are truly strong and confident, you do not always need to prove it. When you feel threatened or insecure, however, making noise can become a way of appearing stronger.

There is a similar expression in English: “Barking dogs seldom bite.”

This old wisdom may be especially relevant to politics today.

Turn on television or look at social media and politics can appear extremely loud. People shout, insult, protest, threaten, and attack anyone who disagrees with them.

But we should remember something important:

The loudest voice does not necessarily represent the largest group.

Social media makes a thousand angry people look like a million. Television naturally focuses on conflict because quiet agreement is not exciting news.

This applies to both the political left and the political right.

A healthy democracy should not be controlled by whoever can shout the loudest. It should be decided by citizens who think, discuss, listen—and ultimately vote.

Noise is not strength.

Anger is not leadership.

And volume is not majority.

Sometimes the strongest person in the room is the one who does not need to bark.
