違和感 — When Something Is Out of Harmony
違和感(Iwakan)

There is a Japanese word, 違和感, that is often translated as “discomfort” or “a strange feeling.” But neither translation fully captures its meaning.

The word 和 (wa) means harmony. 違 (i) means different, wrong, or out of place. 感 (kan) means feeling.

So 違和感 is the feeling that something is out of harmony.

Nothing may be obviously wrong. You may not be able to explain it. The numbers may look correct. Everyone may tell you there is no problem. Yet something does not fit.

That feeling is 違和感.

In business, I have learned not to ignore it.

You meet someone and something feels wrong. You read a proposal and one small detail does not fit. You look at a project that appears to be going well, but something bothers you.

違和感 is not proof that something is wrong. It may turn out to be nothing.

But it is often a reason to stop, look again, and ask another question.

Experience sometimes speaks to us before logic can explain why.

When you feel 違和感, don't immediately dismiss it.

Something may be out of harmony. Find out why.
