Japanese Wisdom: 当たり前 — Nothing Is Truly Ordinary
当たり前 (atarimae) means something we consider normal, natural, or simply expected.
The lights turn on.
Water comes from the faucet.
The office is clean.
The server is running.
Your package arrives.
Dinner is on the table.
Water comes from the faucet.
The office is clean.
The server is running.
Your package arrives.
Dinner is on the table.
We call these things 当たり前 because they happen every day.
But behind almost every 当たり前, someone is doing something.
Someone maintains the power lines. Someone cleans the office. Someone monitors the server. Someone delivers the package. Someone prepares the meal.
When something works every day, we stop noticing the effort behind it. We notice people only when something goes wrong.
That may be one of the dangers of 当たり前.
The better someone does their job, the easier it becomes to forget that they are doing it.
So when everything seems normal, remember that normal did not necessarily happen by itself.
Look behind your 当たり前.
There may be someone there who deserves a simple word:
Thank you.
