たじたじ — There Is No Response
The Japanese expression “tajitaji” (たじたじ) describes the state of being completely overwhelmed by someone or something.
It is more than simply losing an argument. You have been pushed so far back that you have no response left. No excuse. No comeback. Nothing more to say.
Imagine confidently making your point, only to have someone answer with facts, logic, or an unexpected question that leaves you speechless.
That is tajitaji.
Interestingly, the word itself sounds almost like someone stepping backward: ta-ji, ta-ji. It carries the feeling of retreating little by little under pressure.
